Gentle Cleansing: Why Squeaky Clean Is Not the Goal

Many of us grew up believing that skin should feel squeaky after washing. In reality, that tight feeling usually means a cleanser has stripped away more than dirt. The goal is skin that feels clean and comfortable, not raw.
Choose a mild cleanser
Look for products described as gentle or for sensitive skin. Cream, gel, milk and low-foam cleansers are all options. If your face feels tight or itchy after washing, your cleanser may be too strong.
Lukewarm water, not hot
Hot water feels nice but can leave skin dry. Lukewarm is kinder. Finish with a gentle pat dry using a clean towel instead of rubbing.
Use your fingertips
Fingertips are usually all you need. Rough washcloths, brushes and gritty scrubs used daily can irritate skin. If you like exfoliating, do it occasionally and gently, not every day.
Twice a day is plenty
For most people, cleansing in the evening and either cleansing or rinsing in the morning is enough. Washing many times a day can do more harm than good. After a workout, a quick rinse or cleanse helps.
Take off makeup properly
Sleeping in makeup is not a disaster once in a while, but it is better removed. A cleansing balm or micellar water can help with stubborn products before your regular wash.
Be gentle around the eyes
The skin around the eyes is thin. Avoid rubbing hard, and use products meant for that area if you wear eye makeup.
Follow with moisturizer
Even gentle cleansing removes some natural oils. Applying moisturizer afterwards helps restore comfort.
Listen to your skin
Redness, stinging or flaking are signs to slow down. Switch to something milder, pare back other products, and if problems persist, check in with a pharmacist or doctor.
Clean skin should feel calm. If yours does, you are doing it right.
